Abstract

Abstract: The rapid growth of digital payment systems in India has significantly transformed consumer purchasing behavior, especially in urban areas. Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and QR-code-based payment systems have emerged as dominant modes of cashless transactions due to their convenience, speed, and accessibility. This research paper examines how UPI and QR-based payments influence consumer purchase behavior in urban India. The study explores factors such as ease of use, impulsive buying, spending frequency, customer satisfaction, security perception, and merchant adoption. Secondary data from government reports, RBI publications, NPCI statistics, and academic studies have been analyzed to understand the broader impact of digital payments on urban consumers. The findings reveal that UPI and QR-based systems have reduced dependence on cash, encouraged higher transaction frequency, and changed spending habits among consumers. The study also identifies challenges such as cybersecurity risks, digital fraud, and technological dependency. The paper concludes that UPI and QR-based payments are reshaping India’s retail economy and consumer behavior while accelerating the nation’s transition toward a digital economy.
