IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON YOUTH
Abstract
Abstract: Social media has become an integral part of modern youth culture, significantly shaping communication patterns, behavior, and psychological well-being. With the rapid growth of digital platforms, young individuals increasingly rely on social media for interaction, entertainment, and information sharing. This research paper examines both the positive and negative impacts of social media on youth, focusing on key areas such as mental health, education, social interaction, and identity formation. On the positive side, social media enhances connectivity, promotes learning opportunities, and allows self-expression and creativity. It also enables access to educational resources and global awareness, fostering knowledge development among youth. However, excessive use of social media has been linked to several adverse effects, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and reduced academic performance. Issues such as cyberbullying, social comparison, and addiction further contribute to psychological stress and behavioral changes. Moreover, prolonged screen time often disrupts sleep patterns and reduces real-life social interactions. The influence of social media varies depending on usage patterns, content exposure, and individual differences. The study concludes that social media, when used appropriately, can be a powerful tool for youth development, but its misuse can lead to significant negative consequences.
