DIGITAL DISRUPTION IN JOURNALISM: NAVIGATING THE CHANGING MEDIA ENVIRONMENT
Abstract
Abstract: The journalism industry has undergone profound transformation due to rapid digital disruption. Technological innovations such as the internet, social media, artificial intelligence (AI), mobile devices, and data analytics have reshaped news production, distribution, and consumption. Traditional business models based on print advertising and subscriptions have been challenged, while new digital-native platforms and participatory media practices have emerged. This research paper examines the nature, drivers, and impacts of digital disruption in journalism, with particular emphasis on changes in newsroom practices, audience engagement, revenue models, and ethical considerations. Using a qualitative and conceptual research design supported by secondary data, the study analyzes current trends and identifies opportunities and challenges faced by journalists and media organizations. The paper concludes that while digital disruption threatens traditional journalism structures, it also offers significant opportunities for innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability if strategically managed. Keywords: Digital journalism, media disruption, social media, artificial intelligence, news industry, media economics
