EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION: THE IMPACT OF GENDER ROLES - A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Abstract

This study aims to systematically review the influence of emotional intelligence on conflict resolution in couple relationships, wherein masculinity and femininity traits were originally proposed as moderators. It is a systematic literature review that serves as the basis for data collection. Analysis of selected studies suggests that gender-based traits not only moderate the relationship between emotional intelligence and conflict resolution, but may also play a central role in influencing conflict resolution both indirectly, via emotional intelligence, and directly, through independent psychosocial mechanisms. No existing study incorporates the three main variables together in a single model, and the literature reviewed found that most studies have been conducted on heterosexual or cisgender couples and individuals only, restricting studies on homosexual couples and individuals who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. The novelty is that most studies treat gender-based traits as a mere moderator or a side factor, but this review argues that it may play a more central role in both emotional intelligence and conflict resolution. Additionally, this study attempts to develop a more comprehensive link between the three main variables. Further research should incorporate emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and gender-based traits in an integrated model with samples extending beyond heterosexual or cisgender couples, including more individuals and couples from the LGBTQ+ community. Cultural as well as socioeconomic determinants within it should be jointly incorporated in the research model as well.
