A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE OF 'BAJJIKANCHAL' AND 'BAJJIKA': LANGUAGE, CULTURE, GEOGRAPHY, ECONOMIC, EDUCATION AND SOCIAL APPROACH

Abstract

Abstract: Bajjikanchal, a distinct geographical and cultural region situated in the Terai-Gangetic plains of north Bihar, India, occupies a compelling yet underrepresented position in South Asian regional studies. This paper provides a comprehensive historical perspective on Bajjikanchal and its vernacular language, Bajjika, through six intersecting analytical lenses: language, culture, geography, economy, education, and social structure. Drawing upon historical linguistics, ethnographic accounts, colonial-era records, post-Independence developmental surveys, and contemporary fieldwork-derived data, the study traces how Bajjika evolved from its Maithili-influenced Proto-Indo-Aryan substrate into a recognizable linguistic identity claimed by millions of speakers across the Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, and Vaishali districts. The paper argues that Bajjikanchal's marginalized position in Indian regional politics and linguistic recognition frameworks has directly shaped the socioeconomic underdevelopment and low educational attainment observed in the region. Simultaneously, it documents the rich oral literary tradition, folk music, festival culture, and caste-based social dynamics that define the region's collective identity. The paper concludes with a call for interdisciplinary scholarly attention and policy reform to support Bajjika's recognition, the region's economic integration, and equitable educational access for its communities.
