Abstract

Abstract: Pediatric dentistry is a specialized branch of dentistry concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of oral health conditions in infants, children, and adolescents. Unlike adult dental care, pediatric dental treatment must consider the child's physical growth, psychological development, behavior, family environment, communication abilities, and individual needs. Patient-centered care (PCC) provides an appropriate framework for addressing these factors by placing the child and family at the center of clinical decision-making. In pediatric dentistry, patient-centered care involves effective communication, respect for children's preferences and developmental abilities, parental participation, shared decision-making, individualized behavior guidance, pain and anxiety management, preventive care, and continuity of treatment. Contemporary pediatric dentistry increasingly emphasizes not merely treating dental disease but creating positive dental experiences that encourage lifelong oral-health behaviors. This paper examines the concept of patient-centered care in pediatric dentistry, its major principles, communication strategies, behavior management, parental involvement, pain control, preventive dentistry, special healthcare needs, shared decision-making, challenges, and future directions. The paper argues that integrating patient-centered principles into pediatric dental practice can improve patient experience, treatment cooperation, preventive behavior, satisfaction, and continuity of oral healthcare.
