DIGITAL MEDIA AND DISASTER MANAGEMENT: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
Abstract
Abstract: The rapid evolution of digital media has significantly transformed the landscape of disaster management by enabling real-time communication, rapid information dissemination, and active community engagement across diverse geographical regions. In recent years, platforms such as social media networks, mobile applications, and advanced digital communication systems have emerged as indispensable tools in all phases of disaster management, including preparedness, response, and recovery. These technologies facilitate early warning systems, allow authorities to broadcast critical updates instantly, and empower citizens to share on-ground information, thereby enhancing situational awareness and supporting informed decision-making. The rapid spread of misinformation and fake news during crises can create panic, mislead affected populations, and disrupt rescue operations. This paper, therefore, explores both the opportunities and challenges associated with the integration of digital media in disaster management, emphasizing its potential to improve efficiency, transparency, and responsiveness while also addressing the critical limitations that hinder its optimal utilization. It highlights the urgent need for comprehensive and integrated strategies, including policy frameworks, technological innovations, and digital literacy initiatives, to enhance the reliability, inclusiveness, and overall effectiveness of digital media in disaster risk reduction and management. Keywords: Digital Media, Disaster Management, Social Media, Crisis Communication, ICT, Risk Reduction
